چکیده
To understand the role that hemocytes play in processes of cellular immunity bivalve mollusks, they should be accurately classified based on their morphological and physiological characteristics. The circulating cultured Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) marine mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) were investigated using light microscopy flow cytometry. In mussel, two cell types, granulocytes agranulocytes, identified presence subpopulations cells differing by size granularity level scatter plots. Light microscopic examination confirmed with cytoplasmic granules without granulation hemolymph mussel. oyster, cytometry revealed three types hemocytes: hyalinocytes, granulocytes. both species mainly represented agranular cells, which constituted 78.4 ± 8.9 % 86.7 2.7 (agranulocytes hyalinocytes) oyster. Agranulocytes smallest type They round-shaped had large nuclei narrow cytoplasm. Hyalinocytes larger irregularly shaped, eccentric nuclei. Granulocytes contained numerous eosinophilic, basophilic, mixed formed pseudopodia. Biomineralization-related specialization of hemocytes and mantle tissues of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas.
The molluscan exoskeleton (shell) plays multiple important roles including structural support, protection from predators and stressors, and physiological homeostasis. Shell formation is a tightly regulated biological process that allows molluscs to build their shells even in environments unfavorable for mineral precipitation. Outer mantle edge epithelial cells (OME) and hemocytes were implicate...
متن کاملFunctional characterisation of phagocytes in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas
Invertebrates lack canonical adaptive immunity and mainly rely on innate immune system to fight against pathogens. The phagocytes, which could engulf and kill microbial pathogens, are likely to be of great importance and have to undertake significant roles in invertebrate immune defense. In the present study, flow cytometry combined with histological and lectin staining was employed to characte...
متن کاملCharacterization of the mantle transcriptome in bivalves: Pecten maximus, Mytilus edulis and Crassostrea gigas.
The calcareous shells secreted by bivalve molluscs display diverse and species specific structural compositions, which indicates possible divergent biomineralization processes. Thus, studying multiple mollusc species will provide a more comprehensive understanding of shell formation. Here, the transcriptomes of the mantle tissues responsible for shell deposition were characterized in three comm...
متن کاملReactive Oxygen Species in Unstimulated Hemocytes of the Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas: A Mitochondrial Involvement
The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is a sessile bivalve mollusc whose homeostasis relies, at least partially, upon cells circulating in hemolymph and referred to as hemocytes. Oyster's hemocytes have been reported to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS), even in absence of stimulation. Although ROS production in bivalve molluscs is mostly studied for its defence involvement, ROS may also be ...
متن کاملMolecular characterization of two isoforms of defensin from hemocytes of the oyster Crassostrea gigas.
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are important components of the host innate immune response against microbial invasion. We previously characterized the first AMP from an oyster, a defensin, that was shown to be continuously expressed in the mantle of Crassostrea gigas. In this study, we report the cDNA cloning of two new isoforms of the defensin AMP family (Cg-defh1 and Cg-defh2) from the hemocyt...
